Different from the conventional edge-emitting laser (EEL) that emits light from one side of the chip, the VCSEL´s optical resonator is perpendicular to the semiconductor substrate, so the light emission direction is perpendicular to the top surface of the chip. Compared with EEL, it has smaller power consumption, noise and threshold current. The round beam has high quality and large divergence angle, which is easy to realize single longitudinal mode output and fiber coupling. At the same time, the VCSEL resonant cavity can be adjusted by current to achieve wavelength tunability and high-speed modulation, which is very suitable for infrared high-speed optical communications and gas analysis technologies such as TDLAS.
